It's finally summer, and we've already had several bright and sunny days. We all need to soak up some much-needed vitamin D after being inside for the winter months, but it's important to take it slow and protect your eyes from the sun's ultraviolet rays.
The UV light from the sun can cause damage to your eyes in several different forms. Just a few of the conditions that may result from extended sun exposure are listed below:
Cataracts
Macular Degeneration
Extended sun exposure puts you at higher risk for the above conditions, but may also accelerate progression in those who have already been diagnosed. In other words, sunglasses are beneficial for everyone, young and old! Don't forget about the kiddos; they need protection from the sun too! When choosing sunglasses, don't just pick the least expensive pair you find; those may actually do more damage than going without protection! If your sunglasses do not have UVA and UVB protection, they are only serving as a tint that subsequently allows your pupils to enlarge, allowing more UV light to enter your eye. That defeats the purpose of wearing them!
When searching for sunglasses, ALWAYS choose a pair that provides 99-100% UVA and UVB protection. Wrap-around sunglasses provide even greater protection as they block light from entering on the sides. You may also choose to get polarized lenses, which help cut glare from surfaces like water, windshields, and snow. Reducing glare helps you see clearer and more comfortably.
So remember, when you're planning to be outside this summer, bring those sunglasses! Protect your eyes now so they remain healthier longer. And enjoy the sunshine!
